Experience the Herbstmesse.
550 years of the Basel Herbstmesse.

In the fall of 2020, Suan Conceptual Design was invited to participate in a competition organized by the canton of Basel-Stadt to present ideas for a playful and educational way of communicating the traditions of the Basel Herbstmesse. The concept called “Experience the Herbstmesse” convinced with a combination of digital and printed solutions: The idea box for the 550th anniversary of the Basel Herbstmesse brings knowledge and games into Basel’s classrooms.

Suan developed the concept and the tasks in close cooperation with a team of teachers for different age groups and representatives of the canton. To this end, several workshops were held with the teachers and countless hours were invested in extensive research work, so that the product would do justice to the long tradition of the Basel Herbstmesse and spark joy at the same time.

Tasks that inspire

The task cards in the idea box address all existing subjects and can thus be seamlessly integrated into the curriculum. To make this possible, Suan developed the tasks in workshop situations together with the teachers. The cards in DIN A4 format were devised and designed separately for two different age groups.

Web design

By combining the cards with a website that offers downloadable PDF files and additional audiovisual content, the idea box can be used in different ways and gives teachers the opportunity to combine proven teaching methods with digital technology. The website, programmed by Open Interactive, is accessible and allows everyone to immerse themselves in the history of the Basel Herbstmesse, even during their free time.

Layout and content

Design-wise, the product convinces with a child-oriented, playful illustration language that extends from the box across all task cards and creates a bridge to the diverse content and interesting stories about the Herbstmesse. The typography is kept large and simple so that the cards can be easily read by younger pupils. The content conceptualized by Suan was revised together with the text agency Textair to ensure age-appropriate language throughout and to establish Basel German terms related to the Herbstmesse.
